Lighting Design

Architectural lighting is the illumination for structural design and function. It is more deeply defined as a relationship between art and technology. Its concepts may be applied to both commercial and residential projects. In the field of architectural lighting, many forms of expertise will come into play. Such as: design, physics, and engineering as well as the physiological and psychological effects of light to a person’s mood.

Architectural lighting mainly involves three factors. The first factor being the building’s aesthetics - which is important for both residential and commercial architecture. The second factor is the ergonomic or functionality factor - which is basically any aspect that improves one’s ability to work, live and play in their space. Finally, the third aspect involves energy efficiency - ensuring that light is properly, economically, and optimally distributed throughout the space. This is where architectural lighting and design convene.

Is the lighting not done by the architect or engineers? Why hire lighting designers?

There are certainly many skilled architects who understand the importance of vertical illumination or how light can affect the spatial perception of a space. Likewise, many engineers are well versed in many concepts. A lighting designer will bridge the gap between the aesthetic and technical aspects of light and lighting to create a solution that integrates as well with the architecture as it does with engineering services.

Lighting designers will analyze your space, the users, and their needs in order to provide a holistic lighting solution that considers many factors like glare, visual comfort, your budget, energy consumption, the environment, lighting standards, and light pollution among other aspects.

Light is a powerful tool that can affect people’s moods. This is especially true in the retail industry where the correct lighting, intensity and color can be used to influence customers to purchase products. In a professional setting, specific illuminance can enhance the productivity of desk-bound workers. Nobody knows how to achieve all these more than a lighting design professional.
